Rome comes to San Francisco with the new exhibit - Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition. The new art exhibit at Saint Mary’s Cathedral is great if you want a more detailed view of the artwork. Unlike the original in Rome (which I experienced 14 yrs ago), this one is a mere 10 feet from the ground. The artwork on display was created using high resolution images that were captured by a Japanese TV station, which funded a restoration of the chapel’s ceiling in the early 1980s in exchange for the filming and photo rights of the space.
An audio guide offers in-depth descriptions of each panel, with both biblical and artistic context and it’s about 60/70 mins.
I was not overly impressed. Though the reproductions are good quality, we are still looking at prints. They lack textural appeal, and the grandeur of being in the actual Sistine Chapel with all of the throngs around you, is still breathtaking.
